Wrestling Tri-Meet at Downingtown

Michael had another meet today at Downingtown. The first match was super close and for 5 minutes in the middle of it, the ref had to work out the correct score which ended up being a tie between Mike and his opponent (I think we got very lucky as the score may have been correct). Mike ended up winning 13-12 with the kid almost reversing at the very end - saved by the bell - very close.

His second match was not as close. He got caught and pinned. I think if he wrestled this kid first it would have been much closer...Oh well.

Good Eats Meatloaf - It's whats for dinner

I just finished prepping this delicious looking meatloaf for dinner tonight. The only difference between my recipe and Alton Brown's is that I used 1/2 ground turkey and the other 1/2 ground sirloin. I replaced the ground chuck with the turkey... it's looking awesome so far. I plan on slicing some potatoes to surround it while it bakes. I hope the kids like it...Here is the exact recipe courtesy of Alton Brown and foodnetwork.com.

Ingredients
6 ounces garlic-flavored croutons
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 onion, roughly chopped
1 carrot, peeled and broken
3 whole cloves garlic
1/2 red bell pepper
18 ounces ground chuck
18 ounces ground sirloin
1 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 egg
For the glaze:
1/2 cup catsup
1 teaspoon ground cumin
Dash Worcestershire sauce
Dash hot pepper sauce
1 tablespoon honey
Directions
Heat oven to 325 degrees F.

In a food processor bowl, combine croutons, black pepper, cayenne pepper, chili powder, and thyme. Pulse until the mixture is of a fine texture. Place this mixture into a large bowl. Combine the onion, carrot, garlic, and red pepper in the food processor bowl. Pulse until the mixture is finely chopped, but not pureed. Combine the vegetable mixture, ground sirloin, and ground chuck with the bread crumb mixture. Season the meat mixture with the kosher salt. Add the egg and combine thoroughly, but avoid squeezing the meat.

Pack this mixture into a 10-inch loaf pan to mold the shape of the meatloaf. Onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, turn the meatloaf out of the pan onto the center of the tray. Insert a temperature probe at a 45 degree angle into the top of the meatloaf. Avoid touching the bottom of the tray with the probe. Set the probe for 155 degrees.

Combine the catsup, cumin, Worcestershire sauce, hot pepper sauce and honey. Brush the glaze onto the meatloaf after it has been cooking for about 10 minutes.

Chichester Wrestling Tri-Meet

Well...another Saturday and another few wrestling matches to report on. Michael and the Pottsgrove Wrestling Club had a great day today at the Chichester Middle School Tri-Meet. Michael won both of his matches. Unfortunately Michael's 2 matches were about 4.5 hours apart which made the day veeeeerrrryyyyy long. His first match ended with Michael pinning his opponent in the first period. He executed a beautiful switch - one on one wrist control with a half nelson for the pin. I screwed up and did not record it by accidentally hitting record twice on my video camera. Here is the very end of his match after the referee already raised his hand:

Michael's second match was a bit tougher than the first but he still came away with a nice win after going the full 3 periods and winning by decision 6-3. He locked his hands a couple of times giving his opponent points that he otherwise would not have received. I did record this match and it can be viewed here:

We are of course very proud of Michael - thank goodness for the Nintendo DS, without it I don't know how we would have gotten through a 6 hour day in a middle school gym :)

Daniel Boone Wrestling Tournament - Michael Takes 2nd

Today (January 16th, 2010) Michael wrestled in the Daniel Boone Blazer Mat Club Novice Tournament and took 2nd place. He received his first trophy ever and wrestled extremely well. It was a very long day at 9 hours - we got there at 8:15am and didn't leave until after 5pm - but his DS and the occasional wrestling match made the day go quickly.

He won his first two matches putting him into the finals for first or second place. The boy he wrestled in the finals was about a head taller and caught him for a pin. Michael was disappointed that he lost the finals but was very excited to get a nice trophy. We are very proud. Check out the videos full screen for the best view.

Match 1 (he actually wrestled this boy before in the holiday tournament and just barely won the last time)

Wrestling at Drexel Hill Middle School - Tri-Meet 1-9-2010

Michael had a tri-meet today at Drexel Hill Middle School. We were up at 6am for breakfast and the 45 minute drive to Delaware County. He wrestled in 3 matches - won the first 2 and lost the third. In the first, he pinned his opponent very quickly - his first pin ever :)

The second match was much closer and he won 7-4. It was tied with only seconds to go and he got an escape and takedown for the win. The third match he got caught early and could not get off his back and was unfortunately pinned. All in all a very good day. We are proud.

Pottsgrove Holiday Tournament 2010

Michael's second tournament in his life ended up with a respectable fourth place finish out of ten wrestlers in the 40lb Pee Wee division. There were about 360 wrestlers in the tournament and it was an all day event. Luckily he weighed in for the takedown tournament the Wednesday before this one. He lost his first match, won the next two and lost his final match by a decision. I'm very proud of him.

Michael took 4th place today at the Pottsgrove Holiday Tournament. There were 10 kids in his weight class - PeeWee 40lbs. The 1st and 2nd place winners are twin brothers. Michael wrestled 4 matches - lost the first, won the next two and lost by just a couple of points in the consolation finals.
